For each of the 3B ads we display every day, we need to dynamically choose around 4 products to put in the banner. Not only the choice of algorithm has to be driven by the size of the catalog, but also by a time constraint: the system has less than 100ms to make a recommendation. These two constraints make quite challenging the design of algorithms that can take into account the others complexities of the problem such as the heterogeneity of the catalogs or the cold start problem induced by the fact that products come and leave very frequently. On top of that, the system interacts with a human user across several displays, which requires to introduce either some diversity or some structure across recommendations.
